DSL Modem
When it comes to your internet connection, no piece of equipment is more important than the modem. Your modem is the device that “gets” your computer online and keeps it there. The modem does this by receiving a signal, sending that signal to your computer, and then receiving another signal from your computer, and transmitting that signal back out the internet service provider. A standard modem, used for dial up connections, sends this data over the phone system in much the same way that your phone calls and voice is transmitted when are having a phone conversation. A DSL modem, sometimes also called an ADSL modem, also works over the phone lines, but is capable of transmitting data at a much faster speed than dial up modems, because they use a higher frequency than the standard, “voice box” modems. DSL modems are also popular because they allow you to talk on the phone at the same time you are surfing the internet. No more missing phone calls because the kids are surfing the internet – or no more waiting for the kids to get off the phone so you can get online! Choosing a DSL Modem When it comes to picking a DSL modem for your internet service, the choice will probably be made for you. Most internet service providers have their own modems that they want you to use with their products. Verizon will want you to use a Verizon DSL modem, some companies will want you to use an Actiontec modem, while still other companies will want you to rely upon Westell Infospeed DSL modems. While some companies have picked the modems that work the best with their products, the modem your ISP chooses for you may also have a lot to do with their business partners and not what really works best. Check out some lists of top rated DSL modems and DSL modem reviews to make sure you are getting a good product from your ISP. Your ISP will also let you know about any other equipment you may need, like a DSL router (Westell DSL routers are popular choices) and DSL splitters. Your ISP will also fill you in about the wireless DSL modem and things like adding WPA2 to DSL modems that you may have questions about. DSL modems can be expensive, so if you are in the market for a new internet service provider, it can be worthwhile to hold out for one that is having a free modem promotion. You can often find these promotions from companies in exchange for signing a yearly service contract with them.
