If you’ve ever tried to research things about your computer and your internet connection, then you know that sometimes, some of the information you find seems to be written in another language. If you want a DSL connection you will need a wired or wireless DSL modem. Do you want cable broadband or DSL broadband? Does your modem work via the POTS network? Are you looking for a VoIP? Who is your ISP? Huh?? For whatever reason, most internet companies and computer companies assume that you have a better understand of how things work with the internet and different internet connection than most people actually do. And since these companies don’t seem like they’re going to be re-writing their information in layman’s terms any time soon, then you need to go out and look for definitions of all of these computer terms before you make decisions about your internet connection and the hardware you need. Making the wrong choice could cost you lots of money and leave you with a worthless computer, sitting there, unable to let you get online to do the things you need to do. Take the time to research these definitions before you make any internet related decisions. Where Can You Find Definitions of Technical Terms? One thing you know for sure is that you won’t be finding the definitions of the technical terms you need before you buy on the websites of the various internet service providers (ISPs). Instead, use the internet to look elsewhere for the definitions. Simply typing the term you need into your favorite search engine and running a search on the topic may be enough to get you to a site that can explain the definition of a term in a way you can understand. You might also try online dictionaries, online encyclopedias, and sites that are dedicated to explaining how things work. Many technical minded people have set up these “how it works” kinds of websites as a hobby, and these sites offer some of the best definitions of technical terms around, explained in a way everyone can understand. One thing is for sure when you are looking for technical definitions – if you aren’t sure you understand, keep looking for a new definition. Don’t enter into any service agreements for internet service when you don’t clearly understand what you are getting. Ending up with an internet connection that your computer is not able to handle, a connection that is too slow, or a connection that is faster than you really need can be annoying and costly.
